It appears the spotlight has a broken swivel....I'm begining to beleive this palace is truely broken. I'm maybe operation on military funding....the contributors remain the same. Guess there's somemore senceless big brother spending. What BS! All for what ? As the spotlight freezes the shadows cast a heavy load.

Give me a break !

The one thing this site has in common with reality are the terms of use and the first phone call.

THE WINNER:

Look for a while at the china cat sunflower,
Proud walking jingle in the midnight sun.
Copperdome bodhi drip a silver kimono,
Like a crazy quilt stargown through a dream night wind.

Crazy cat peekin through a lace bandanna,
Like a one-eyed cheshire, like a diamond-eye jack.
A leaf of all colors plays a golden-string fiddle,
To a double-e waterfall over my back.

Comic book colors on a violin river cryin leonardo,
Words from out a silk trombone.
I rang a silent bell, beneath a shower of pearls,
In the eagle-winged palace of the queen chinee.

Kinda brings it all back around, don't it?

Many is the time that I have walked jungle. Only there will you learn the true meaning of "Diddy Wah Diddy."

Ever try to put your thoughts on paper while tripping your brains out? This is what you get--yeah, yeah--you THOUGHT you had found IT all out--established a direct link with God--and you did--but you can't remember what it means. You just know it to be true.

You just have to trust that diamond-eyed jack remembers.

By the way, I remember at a 1971 concert somebody selling china cat sunflower seeds. Ate three and the song really made sense.

I beg to differ, politely; this is a complex and well written song requiring coherence...

VARIOUS (none of these is mine):

China Cat Sunflower was one of the first two lyrics provided by Robert Hunter for the Dead. He spoke about sending them the lyrics in an interview:

"I moved out to New Mexico to be an artist about the time the Dead really started. I wrote Alligator and China Cat Sunflower, and I knew they had a rock 'n' roll band so I mailed them up."

In an interview with Blair Jackson Hunter commented on the writing of the song:

"I wrote it in different settings and added this and that to it. It was originally inspited by Dame Edith Sitwell, who had a way with words. I liked the idea of quick , clicky assonance and alliteration like 'See me dance the polka, said My Wag, like a bear, with my top hat and my whiskers, that tra-la-la trapped affair.' I just liked the way she put things together. I'd have to admit that - before you could trace it back."

In his book of lyrics, Box Of Rain Hunter's comment for China Cat Sunflower is:

"Nobody ever asked me the meaning of this song. People seem to know exactly what I'm talking about. It's good that a few things in this world are clear to all of us."

That was my reaction when I first looked 'em up. I don't think I've ever taken enough drugs to where that may have made sense. Story goes that it was Hunter's first song that he wrote for Jerry an he scribed it while bugging on some serious blotter in Arizona. That fits.

...Just put words together that sounded good together... I also read somewhere that Hunter's common reply when asked the meaning of the lyrics is something to the effect of "you tell me"...

In the immortal words of Steve Martin:

Little Johnny (first day of school):"Can I mambo dogface in the banana patch?"
Teacher: "Get that kid outta here, give him a special test"

Don't forget about the deck.....One-eye'd jacks and jokers aren't as wild as they might have been 20 years ago.

If you state your opinion in the forest and there is no woman there to hear you - will you still be wrong?

Not bad other than works sux worse than ever-new corp owners eliminating more managers daily. sux waiting for the ax to fall but seems like I may have found an unbelievable new gig. Daughter stressing waiting to get college and scholarships news so she can start imagining where and what her life will look like for the next 4 yrs. 19th wedding anniversary coming up as is a trip to Denver to look at colleges. the vice is tightening wondering where the 25k for college is going to magically appear from each yr!
